Preparing for a Dental Implants Procedure

Preparing for a Dental Implants Procedure from Great Lakes Oral Surgery in Ann Arbor, MIPreparation is a crucial part of the success of procedures involving dental implants. When it comes to tooth replacement, implants offer a solution similar to having a natural tooth again. However, patients should understand the process and the steps they must take to lay the foundation for a safe and effective procedure.

Overview of the procedure

The entire dental implant process happens in three parts and takes place over several months. It starts with the placement of the implant post. The oral surgeon surgically implants a screw-like titanium post into the patient's jawbone during this first procedure. After this surgery, the patient must wait several months for the implant to integrate into the jawbone. Then, the abutment and crown can be attached to the implant post, completing the process.

The Consultation

The oral surgeon must examine the patient to ensure dental implants are an appropriate solution. Through an oral exam and x-rays, the provider will evaluate the patient to ensure they are in good oral health and have the jawbone density required to support a dental implant. The surgeon may recommend bone grafting if the patient lacks the necessary jaw bone density. In addition, the surgeon will discuss any oral health issues the patient needs to address before surgery.

Health considerations

Along with good oral health, the patient must be physically healthy enough for surgery. During the consultation, the patient needs to discuss all health conditions and any medications they are taking. There may be medications the patient needs to discontinue before surgery. Likewise, the oral surgeon may recommend the patient start certain medications, such as antibiotics, if the patient is immunocompromised. Patients who smoke should quit before surgery, as smoking and tobacco products impair healing.

Set up for post-op

In addition to taking care of their oral and physical health, patients should prepare for the post-op period ahead of time. Patients must arrange for a ride home after the procedure, especially if they receive sedation during the procedure. Consider taking at least two days off work, more if the oral surgeon recommends. It is wise to get together any soft food, over-the-counter pain medications, or other supplies necessary for the post-op period.

Day of the procedure

The day of the procedure plans may differ for each patient and depend on the treatment plan and factors such as the type of sedation. The patient will likely need to avoid eating or drinking several hours before the procedure. The provider will tell the patient how to handle any medication on the day of the procedure. The patient needs to wear loose-fitting and comfortable clothing and follow any pre-procedure instructions given to them by their surgeon.
